Student Teaching

Week 9

I would rate this week at a 3. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either.
Observe
This week I was able to demonstrate a strategy group to the other first grade teachers, specialists, Principal, and Assistant Principal. While I was nervous at first, once I started teaching I felt confident in my abilities. I got great feedback about my strategies and the engagement of the students in my group, as well as the other groups.
Reflect
This week, and every week, I have realized that classroom management comes with trial and error, reflections about what went well and what didn't, and correcting myself through the process.
Focus
My short term efforts of becoming confident in my abilities are aligning with my long term goal of being confident by me getting more experience in teaching and managing.
Be Productive
I could have spent more time on edTPA and less time on worrying about what score I'll get.
Have Courage
I have noticed as the weeks go by that I am continually effected by my fear of failure. This fear then causes me not to want to put in the work for success, so I have to force myself to do the work. While I am still getting my work done, I do not always feel confident in this.
Begin Anew
First steps for next week is to turn in edTPA! Yay it's going to be done! Next is to focus more on my students' needs. I have realized that with so much of my time being taken up with lesson plans and edTPA and any other requirement we have that I do not spend as much time outside of the classroom thinking about how I can improve my students' lives, which is the reason I am becoming a teacher. I want to focus more on my students and try not to worry so much about everything else.
I analyzed my students' reading this week to help determine what extra support they need in strategy groups. I also analyzed my students' behaviors towards one another during reader's workshop and decided to change some reading partners that would work better together. So far the groups are working out okay.
To other student teachers: We're almost there! Hang in there!
NCTCS
1c I was able to lead in the teaching profession this week by demonstrating to other teachers how a reading strategy group should be performed with students
2d I have adapted a lot towards students special needs this week, such as letting one of my EC children to sit on the floor in front of the screen so she will actually complete assignments. This allows her to feel less closed in, which she has expressed concerns of when taking tests because the students at every table have a testing folder to cover their work, which takes up a lot of space.
3c I was able to integrate science and literacy together this week
4b I took a step back in math and worked with students to break down graphs part by part instead of having them take a survey, answer questions, tally up their answers, and figuring out how to graph those answers.
5c I have changed reading partners based on data
I am collecting evidence for my portfolio
At the moment my CE needs no support
I need to know if I'm making appropriate progress in student teaching.

Student Teaching

Week 8

I would rate this week at a 2. I have suffered from an excruciating migraine all week and it has made me quite ill. Just looking at computer screens or anything with lights makes me very nauseous
Observe
This week I was able to get through to one of my students that I was having a hard time with. This student had been testing me, but I sat him down for a heart to heart and we have been getting along quite well
Reflect
I definitely need to keep myself healthier so I can be at my full potential every week. I need to figure out what is the cause of these migraines and better control them so I can be a better teacher for my students
Focus
My confidence was lacking this week. Because I was not feeling well all week I knew I was not at my best. I am hoping for better for next week
Be Productive
I could have spent more time working on edTPA and less time worrying about not being capable
Have Courage
I was affected greatly this week because I felt as if I would not be able to complete edTPA in time or do well.
Begin Anew
The first logical steps for next week is to spend as much time as possible working on edTPA
I analyzed some math data this week to help guide my instruction for next week
To other student teachers: it may be the hardest time in your educational career, but keep on pushing through because we're going to make it
NCTCS
1a I was able to empower my students to do better in the effort they put towards their work by rewarding those that were always on task
2a I was able to provide a positive environment with the student I was having a hard time with
3d I was able to relate to students with persuasive writing that they should try to persuade someone to let them have a pet. They loved this and was very excited to do this
4e I was able to use a lot of technology in this week's lesson with the chromebooks and mousebots.
5a I analyzed a lot of math data to inform my instruction for next week

Student Teaching

Week 7

I would rate this week at a 4. While this week has gone well for the most part in my classroom and school community, I am beyond exhausted.
Observe
I have noticed two of my students that I have had the most problems with in the classroom have really grown and shown a lot of progress. One of the students started doing really well when I gave this student more compliments and more hugs. I was surprised by the difference a few good words here and there mean to a child.
Reflect
Next week I will build more on my modeling techniques. I will make sure students are not just copying what I do but thinking through it for themselves while I ask them questions of understanding.
Focus
I have been quite tired, so I have not paid as much attention to gaining my confidence. I have noticed that my students are growing in their subject areas and I understand more of where I need to focus on working with my students.
Be Productive
I could have spent more time on edTPA and less time worrying! I have come to the point that every time I take a break I feel awful for not working 24/7. I realize I shouldn't feel this way, but it's been consistent for 5 weeks now. I don't know why I feel like I don't deserve any rest! There's just so much to be done.
Have Courage
I was affected this week by doubting myself. With edTPA looming over us, I felt as if I was drowning, and this affected me starting on my work. I worried more than I did anything else this past week.
Begin Anew
First, I need rest. Then, I need to finalize my edTPA.
I analyzed a lot of our reader's workshop data to make sure that students were understanding what I am teaching. They are moving along well!
I would tell another student teacher not to worry as much, but I don't know how to do that myself! Just know that everything works out the way it's meant to.
NCTCS
1b I demonstrated leadership in the school by partaking in science night and helping a wide variety of students learn how to code mouse bots and codepillars.
2a I showed students that I cared about them personally. My students have opened up to me after I have shown them that I care for their success.
3c I was able to integrate social studies into many of my lessons for the week.
4g I have worked with groups and have helped out with many conflicts arising by asking students what they can do differently and how they can solve the problem on their own without telling me about every little inconvenience that happens
5a I have been analyzing date from my student's tests and even changed reading partners and center groups based on their MOY test scores
I have been collecting artifacts and volunteering where I can, such as science night and reading a chapter from a book for the entire school to watch.
No additional support or questions. Thank you!

Student Teaching

Week Six

This week went well! I'm rating this week at a 5! I feel well rested, I got my lesson plans done early and they weren't over 90 pages! The students did well for the most part, but many have been out sick with strep or the flu.
Observe
I got through all of my edTPA teaching! They went well and I'm very glad I recorded everything to showcase student's understanding of the topic.
Reflect
The students had a really hard time with solving unknown problems even though we have been doing them for a month, so I will be practicing this with them again.
Focus
I feel relieved with myself and confident in my skills as a teacher. I am definitely more confident in what I do, which I wasn't at the beginning of student teaching.
Be Productive
I could have spent more time reviewing over student's work and less time stressing about everything! I think I have been more stressed this semester than I have ever been!
Have Courage
I was scared to try programming this week, but after I played around with the mouse bots in our classroom I was able to teach students how to program them. The lesson was fun and the students were engaged the whole time! I was scared because this is edTPA week for my math and literacy, but everything went well.
Begin Anew
My first logical steps would be to analyze more student data that I have collected so I can address any misconceptions during intervention. I need to clear my mind of any negativity that says I can't do this, because I am proving I can be a great teacher.
I analyzed a lot of test scores that were state mandated this week. I also analyzed the data from edTPA. This will help me choose activities for intervention next week.
Try not to stress so much! It can be hard, but it will hinder you. Be calm and enjoy where you're at.
Standards
1c I lead in the teaching profession this week by observing another teacher and leaving her feedback on how she taught. This was a great practice for me and I volunteered to let all of the other first grade teachers come and watch me teach and give me the same type of feedback.
2a I had to deal with a lot of sickness in the classroom this week, and lend students a caring and helping hand to get through the day or until they were picked up. I was very nurturing this week and extra sweet to them to help them make it through the day.
3d I was able to make instruction relevant to students by using the 100 days of school for a whole day of fun, educational activities. I got to use mouse bots this week which all students loved because they're really into technology!
4d I was able to integrate technology in almost every lesson, but the major lesson was programming mouse bots.
5a I had a lot of analyzing to do this week with edTPA!
I have started collecting lots of artifacts for my portfolio. No support is needed for the moment. Thank you!
