Student Teaching

Week Five

I would rate this week at a 4 again. My lessons went really well, I'm doing better in the afternoons with my classroom management, and I have a great team on my hallway that has helped  me with any needs I have. I have developed meaningful connections with the staff at my school.
Observe:
Almost all students were able to show growth in their reading. Our unit was "How to read aloud like an Expert" and the students were able to incorporate my lessons into their reading, which made me feel very successful with them.
Reflect:
I most definitely need to focus on teaching math strategies. While I do okay with this subject area, I know I can improve upon this area so the students understand the math clearly.
Focus:
The more I'm in the classroom, the more confident I become that I will be a great teacher. This aligns with my long-term goal of regaining my confidence in becoming a teacher.
Be Productive:
I could have spent more time on my portfolio and edTPA and less time stressing about the next week's lessons.
Have Courage:
My week was impacted greatly by apprehension and indecision. I spent Monday and Tuesday very stressed about my first observation that I made sure to have a preponderance of evidence. I wasn't sure exactly what I needed so I did too much, but I was scared of what could happen so I did not teach to the full extent of my abilities.
Begin Anew:
Next week I have to continue on with working on my lessons every single day. I have to make more log forms to fill in for my portfolio as well.
I looked at some data that informed me that my students did not understand how to find an answer in a text to prove that their answer is correct. I will be re-teaching this during interventions so my students will be able to use the text as guidance for finding the correct answer to any questions asked about the text.
Other student teachers- be friendly with all staff members! They are your resources and are there to guide you in your journey as you continually grow into becoming a great teacher.
NCTCS
1b I was able to demonstrate leadership in the school by collaborating with specialists and other teachers about what a student on an MTSS tier plan needs to work on and what a student in speech therapy needs to work on so they can become successful in their academic career.
2d I collaborated with specialists to help my lessons benefit the students.
3d I was able to make instruction relevant to students. I even had a lesson on "Needs and Wants" where students were able to use things in a basket from a home to determine if it was a need or want. These were all items they have used or use on a regular basis.
4h I have been using multiple methods to assess what my students learn. I keep a reflection on each student for each lesson.
5b I have been able to analyze my own development that aligns with my professional goals
I wasn't able to complete much of my portfolio because I had been working on paperwork for my county. Neither me nor my CE need any additional support for this week.

Student Teaching

Week 4

I rate this week a 4. While it was a short week with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and orientation, I had a great time in the classroom teaching. This was my first week where I have taken over full time. I'm working on management for the last hour and a half of the day because that is when students are antsy about going home and I haven't taught in the afternoons until this week. I am also getting used to this schedule! I'm slowly working on lesson plans, reflections, edTPA, my portfolio, and sleeping at some point!
Observe:
I learned a lot this week. I saw that what I was teaching students was actually clicking for them. We are doing a new unit on reading like an expert, and the students have grown in reading out loud with expression. I could tell they were all really trying! It felt great that I was successful.
Reflect:
What I'm going to build on for next week is teaching in the afternoons. It is after lunch, then recess, then specials, so students aren't always in the mindset to sit back down and do more work until it's time to leave. I will do some breathing exercises with them to slow down their heart rate and help them focus on the last tasks of the day.
Focus:
I have been working on building up my confidence as a teacher, and after observing so many students understand my lessons and progressing through, I have built on my long term goal of being a confident teacher.
Be Productive:
I could have spent more time spreading out when I plan my lessons for the next week and less time "taking a break". I could also spend more time giving students a brain break to help them refocus.
Have Courage:
I apprehended my lesson plans because I was fearful of them not being up to par.
Begin Anew:
The first logical steps for next week is get a head start over the weekend in lesson planning, and spread out when I do what instead of cramming doing everything all at once. I need to clear my head of outside distractions and focus more on my lessons, edTPA, and portfolio.
I analyzed a lot of data about the different sounds students should know how to produce, yet we have some students not able to produce these sounds, such as th, ch, wh, ck, op, sh so I have taken this group of students and helped them during intervention with these sounds and sounding them out in words.
One piece of advice I can share for student teachers and anyone else is that it is quite easy to become jealous/envious of another because they may excel in areas you do not. Instead of being hateful towards these people, become insightful. Ask them their strategies and their advice for how they have been doing well in these areas. This will help you as a person become more confident in your abilities.
NCTCS
1a - I was able to lead in my classroom all week.
2a - I have treated each student as an individual and let them know I am emotionally there for them. I have had a few students open up to me and many come to me whenever there is a problem.
3c - I have connected reading and writing with a different areas such as science and social studies.
4e - I helped students learn new strategies in reading and helped them think of new goals for when they're writing.
5a - I analyzed a lot of student learning this week. Some students struggle in  different areas whether they have been labeled high, medium, or low they can all have the same misconceptions
For my portfolio, I have almost completed my classroom website, I submitted in my resume, created a PDP and am working towards my new philosophy of education.
My CE has a few questions about differentiation. We know that differentiation is important, but when we differentiate in intervention centers it singles students out because the work for the lower students is obviously much below the work for the higher students, and we don't want any student feeling singled out.
Right now I am just trying my best at making great lesson plans with the scripted lessons we have in my school system.

Student Teaching

Week 3

I would rate this week a 4. I had a great time teaching partially for 3 hours a day this week. Everything went very well, I am just still getting used to writing lesson plans outside of school when I'm so tired!
Observe
I was surprised how well my lessons went this week! Whenever someone is student teaching for the first time in a new class it's easy to not listen to the student teacher, but I did well with behavior and all students got their work done! Centers went smoothly and I was able to conference with every child once every single day.
Reflect
I did well on my lessons, but I could be more prepared with what exactly I want to say. My county uses Lucy Calkins, which is scripted, which is hard to memorize.
Focus
Short term I have been become so much more confident in my skills as a teacher, which ties directly into giving me the confidence I need for my long term goal in knowing I belong here as a teacher.
Be Productive
I could have spent more time being strict on time management and less time looking for work for students to do. I will not have this problem next week because I will already have my lesson plans, but when I had the sub plans I was unsure of what exactly the students were supposed to be doing to be learning more to gain knowledge instead of wasting a day.
Have Courage
While I was teaching my first lesson on Monday, many faculty members came in and watched me teach, including the principal and vice principal. I was nervous at first because I know that student teaching is like a long interview process, but I think I did well. I had many fears that I could not get to the students, but they always listened to me and stayed on task.
Begin Anew
The first logical steps for next week is to use MLK day to get a head start on my lessons so I can then get more work done on my portfolio.
I analyzed all data from every single lesson I taught. Some students just need help focusing and writing the same thing I have written on the board, other students need help sounding out word chunks, and the higher students need more practice with conjunctions. I would advise other student teachers to be organized and have things printed so that everything they need is easily accessible.
NCTCS
Standard 1 I was able to lead in my classroom during my lessons.
Standard 2 I was able to adapt needs for my students by changing the lessons I had written and pulled small interventions for what I saw students struggling in.
Standard 3 I aligned all lessons with the NCSCOS
Standard 4 I was able to use technology to show educational videos, projected guided worksheets, and used a timer to keep students on task when they were supposed to be doing different tasks.
Standard 5 I analyzed all student learning for every lesson I taught.
I have started to complete my global awareness and showcase what I believe that is in my educational philosophy. I nor my CE need any support.
Thank you for reading!
Have a wonderful week!

Student Teaching

Week 2

Inside the classroom, my overall rating would be a 5. I have learned so much about my students and have been able to help them with so many different needs, such as reading and phonics, all the way to teaching students how to tie their shoes by using the book My Kicks by Susan Verde, which I received from Gardner Webb University. If I had to rate my time outside of the classroom, I would give myself a 1. Getting up early and driving 50 minutes to school every day has been a challenge for me. I am getting used to the long hours and am working on my time management. I have had trouble this week managing my time outside of the classroom getting my lessons done, working on edTPA and trying to keep up with my portfolio. Next week I hope to gain a better understanding of my time management and when to create lessons efficiently.
Observe
I was able to create a morning meeting poster for students. When students come to class in the morning, they have a choice to hug me, give me a high five, do a fun hand shake, dance into the classroom, or wave hello to me. I was surprised how excited the students were to do this! Even the students that didn't like to be touched were excited to choose to hug me or do a fun hand shake. I loved it!
Reflect
I will allow more time to complete my lessons.
Focus
My short term efforts are helping keeping my long term goals aligned by helping me be more confident in my teaching. I have done little things every day that help me realize I am meant to be a teacher. My long term goal is to become confident in this.
Be Productive
I could have spent more time on edTPA.
Have Courage
Apprehension and indecision impacted my time greatly this week. I did not get ahead in edTPA like I had planned and I did not get ahead in my lessons like I wanted to. I'm not behind by any means, but I'm also not ahead.
Begin Anew
The first logical step would be to set specific time frames for when I am going to be working on what. I need to adjust quickly so I'm not so tired when I get home! This week I was able to observe mClass testing, which helped me see what I will be doing in the future. Only some of my class was tested, but many of them struggled and read below their level. I would advise other student teachers to try and adjust as quickly as you can so you can become used to a set routine.
NC Teacher Standards
Standard 1 - I was able to demonstrate leadership in my classroom by taking my class to and from specials, lunch, and recess on my own.
Standard 2 - I helped students individually solve problems, such as not getting along with one another to helping with reading and phonics.
Standard 3 - I have made my lessons relevant to my student's needs so they can grow in their educational career.
Standard 4 - I was able to utilize technology in my classroom by playing videos during recess, timers during centers, and rewarding class points for a job well done while walking in line.
Standard 5 - I analyzed the data from mClass testing for my students this week.
I am redoing my philosophy of education by thinking about my lessons and how I teach. My CE would like to know when the first visit to the school will be. I would like to know this as well, so we can all get acclimated with how the classroom will be when I am being observed.

Student Teaching

Week 1!

This week I am observing my classroom and getting used to the classroom rules and procedures. This week is going to be given a rating of 4. While this week has been going well, many of the students have had breakdowns from missing family members or forgetting rules, such as how to walk in line and turn in work. This week I got to achieve helping three students understand the difference between a fiction and a non-fiction book by going through buckets of books and determining why they are fiction or non-fiction and giving me an explanation as to why they believe this. All students showed understanding! I have not started lessons yet in the classroom. My short term and long term goals are in the process of being made. I could have spent more time helping the EC and lower students in the classroom instead of sitting and observing. Apprehension has affected me from being at my full potential. I am afraid of getting comfortable in a classroom. Next week I begin making my first lesson for student teaching! The mental clutter I can clear is understanding how the class schedule works and organize that into how I will teach my lessons. There are some parts of the day that are unclear to me, but I know with my time next week I will be able to understand the classroom system better. My advice to other student teachers is to get work done early! It is easy to get in the habit of procrastinating, but it is a lot less stressful to get work done early. I have completed the outline of my portfolio and an introduction to myself for my school webpage I'm building. There is no support needed at this time.
NCTCS
Standard 1E- I have shown fairness in how I treat students. I have shown high ethical standards by arriving early and prepared every day.
Standard 2A- I have been nurturing to students. I have calmed students that were crying or having a bad day.
Standard 3B- I have followed along with the lessons my CE teaches and have been able to assist students in understanding the lesson.
Standard 4E- I helped students with their critical thinking skills by asking them intriguing questions during individual work.
Standard 5C- I have been exploring new ideas on how I can teach different subject matter.
